People’s Participation In Education (WATU) is a non-governmental and not- for-profit organization based in Moshi (the home of Mount Kilimanjaro) in Tanzania. It was established by International School teachers who have spent more than 15 years supporting educational development in Tanzania in various aspects.
The country Director is Josiah Mchome who is former Economics and Business Studies teacher as well as CAS Coordinator at International School Moshi. At International School Moshi, Josiah gave the CAS programme an International exposure by inviting foreign schools to open up work relationship with local schools. Before joining International School Moshi, Josiah worked for United States Peace Corps in Tanzania as Country Training Director. He has a wide experience working with students and adults from other countries.
WATU would like to offer the following programme to interested volunteers:
- A placement in our pre-primary school with specific responsibility for creating and teaching a lively, inter-active programme aimed at introducing some basic English to the children. You would work alongside Sarah and Veronica, our two very dynamic Montesorri teachers at our developing learning and resource centre at Shiri Mgungani, situated in the countryside some three kilometres from Moshi town.
- A placement in our office in Moshi town with specific responsibility for publishing our regular newsletter to the sponsors of the hundred or so children who we are supporting in full time education in the Kilimanjaro region. You would be working with the Sponsorship Programme Administrator and your work would involve visiting schools in the region to get to know the sponsored students and liaising with their sponsors mainly through the medium of the Newsletter.
These placements could be of any length from four weeks to six months.
Both of these placements carry considerable responsibility; therefore, we are looking for a confident, young person who wants an interesting experience whilst being of assistance to others, who can work in a team, put up with the rough and the smooth and who has computer skills. At the pre-primary school most of the people you will be working with speak little or no English, and in the Moshi placement you must be prepared to work with students whose English is often very weak.
You will find this part of Tanzania to be a very attractive area to live. The people are welcoming, the countryside is beautiful and there are many interesting opportunities for wider travel and exploration.
WATU would find you accommodation at whatever level you require ranging from very inexpensive, simple accommodation to more comfortable accommodation with a family or in a small hotel. The volunteer would be responsible for financing him/herself but you should note that once you are here it is not expensive to live in and around Moshi.
