Josiah Mchome a former teacher of IB Economics and Business Studies at The International School of Moshi and Richard Heery, a teacher of English at The International School of Geneva have been working together in the Kilimanjaro region of northern Tanzania since 1996. With students from their respective schools they have raised funds not only to support the education of scores of students but also to construct, renovate, and equip classrooms, and to build toilet blocks, kitchens and teachers’ accommodation in more than twenty rural and urban pre-primary, primary and secondary schools.

However, whilst these infrastructures have been crucial, local teachers and administrators have stressed that access to information and an awareness of more efficient teaching methodology can often be limited. Thus was born the idea to construct a learning and resource centre, and to equip that centre with a modern science laboratory, a computer laboratory, a library with Internet access, and a conference hall.

People’s Participation In Education Trust Fund (WATU) will be responsible for the construction of the resource and learning centre at Shiri-Mgungani, for transferring modern science and mathematics textbooks and other appropriate academic materials in good condition to schools and individual students in the region, for continuing to support financially students who would otherwise not receive an education and for facilitating the work of other organizations and individuals who are committed to improving the education of young people in Tanzania.
